Jam nuts are designed to be tightened against the mating material and then having a finished or heavy hex nut tightened against the jam nut to keep it from loosening.
Grade 2 is a low carbon steel which conforms to strict chemical composition requirements. This is an industrial purpose grade and your everyday bolt and screw specification.
Zinc is relatively economical and offers good corrosion resistance in environments not subject to excessive moisture. A clear or blueish chromate finish is applied on top of the zinc to provide additional protection against oxidation.
